It is precisely because of their wide range of applications and large-scale production advantages that hot-rolled steel coils have become an important bridge connecting steel smelting and metal product processing.
Hot-rolled steel coils, as an important form of steel product, embody the efficiency and continuity of modern steel rolling technology in their production process. Hot rolling production uses continuously cast slabs as raw material. The slabs are first uniformly heated to approximately 1200 degrees Celsius in a heating furnace to achieve optimal plastic deformation conditions. After heating, the slabs undergo high-pressure water descaling and then enter the roughing mill. Through multiple reciprocating rolling passes, the thickness is reduced from approximately 200 mm to 20-50 mm, while simultaneously breaking down the as-cast structure and improving internal quality. The intermediate slabs after rough rolling enter the finishing mill, where they are continuously rolled by six to seven stands, further reducing the thickness to the finished product range of 1.2-25 mm. The final rolling temperature is controlled between 850 and 950 degrees Celsius. After finishing rolling, the strip immediately enters the laminar flow cooling zone. By controlling the cooling rate, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the steel plate are adjusted, and finally, it is coiled into steel coils by a coiler. The entire production process is continuous and highly efficient, with a single production line capable of producing millions of tons annually.
The characteristics of hot-rolled steel coils are mainly reflected in their specification range and performance features. Thicknesses range from 1.2 mm to 25 mm, widths from 600 mm to 2200 mm, and single coil weights can reach 20 to 30 tons, meeting the diverse needs of downstream industries. Hot-rolled steel coils have an iron oxide scale on their surface, giving them a grayish-black appearance. Their dimensional accuracy and surface quality are not as good as cold-rolled products, but their production costs are lower, giving them an economic advantage. The mechanical properties of hot-rolled steel coils are controlled by adjusting the chemical composition and rolling process, allowing for the production of various varieties such as ordinary carbon structural steel, low-alloy high-strength steel, pipeline steel, and automotive steel. The microstructure of hot-rolled steel coils is mainly composed of ferrite and pearlite, with uniform grain size, exhibiting good comprehensive mechanical properties and processing performance, making them suitable for further cold working and forming processes.
Hot-rolled steel coils occupy an important raw material position in the metal products industry and are the base material for many deep-processed products. In the cold-rolled steel production field, hot-rolled steel coils are the basic raw material for cold-rolled sheets and coated sheets. After pickling to remove oxide scale, cold rolling produces thinner, smoother cold-rolled steel coils, which can be further processed into high-value-added products such as galvanized sheets and color-coated sheets. In welded pipe production, hot-rolled steel coils are slit into narrow strips, which are then formed and welded into straight-seam welded pipes or spiral welded pipes, widely used in building structures, fluid transportation, and machinery manufacturing. In steel structure manufacturing, hot-rolled steel coils are leveled and sheared into medium-thick plates for use in construction, bridges, and shipbuilding projects. Hot-rolled steel coils also play an irreplaceable role in container manufacturing, automotive parts, and hardware products industries. It is precisely because of their wide range of applications and large-scale production advantages that hot-rolled steel coils have become an important bridge connecting steel smelting and metal product processing.
