The surface quality of the wire directly affects the adhesion and uniformity of the plating; therefore, strict control of surface defects and cleanliness is necessary during production to ensure reliable plating quality.
Surface treatment of steel wire rods is an important means to improve their corrosion resistance and service life. Various surface treatment methods can be selected depending on the usage environment. Pickling is the most basic surface treatment process, using chemical methods to remove iron oxide scale from the wire surface, obtaining a clean metal surface, providing a good foundation for subsequent coating or drawing processes. Phosphating treatment forms a phosphate conversion film on the wire surface, increasing lubricity, improving drawing performance, and providing some rust protection. Oiling treatment forms a thin layer of anti-rust oil film on the wire surface, preventing rust during transportation and storage, suitable for short-term protection. For wire rods requiring further drawing processing, surface lubrication treatment is crucial. Through phosphating-saponification or copper plating, a lubricating layer is formed on the surface, reducing the coefficient of friction during drawing, increasing drawing speed, and extending die life.
Coating technology is an effective means to improve the corrosion resistance of steel wire rods. Depending on the coating material, it can be divided into various types such as zinc plating, copper plating, tin plating, and nickel plating. Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common coating process. Steel wire is coated with molten zinc to form a zinc-iron alloy layer and a pure zinc layer on its surface, providing excellent sacrificial anode protection; even if the coating is partially damaged, it still protects the substrate. Electro-galvanizing obtains a pure zinc layer through electrolytic deposition, resulting in a uniform coating and a bright surface, suitable for products with high surface quality requirements. Copper-plated wire is used to manufacture tire wire, hose wire, etc., with the copper layer serving as a drawing lubricant and rubber adhesive layer, offering good processing and bonding properties. Tin-plated wire is used for electronic component leads; the tin layer provides good solderability and conductivity. Coating thickness and uniformity are important quality control indicators, and stable coating quality is ensured through online monitoring and process control.
The surface treatment and coating technology of steel wire have a significant impact on its corrosion resistance in special environments. In marine climates or industrial atmospheric environments, wire with thicker coatings or zinc-aluminum alloy plating has a longer service life. In high-temperature environments, aluminum-plated or nickel-plated wire can resist high-temperature oxidation. In applications requiring bonding with rubber, brass-plated steel wire forms a strong chemical bond with the rubber. In food processing and the medical field, tin-plated or stainless steel wire meets hygiene and corrosion resistance requirements. Through the appropriate selection of surface treatment and plating technologies, steel wire can maintain long-term stable performance in various complex environments, meeting the specific needs of different industries. The surface quality of the wire directly affects the adhesion and uniformity of the plating; therefore, strict control of surface defects and cleanliness is necessary during production to ensure reliable plating quality.
